THIN MAN: So, has he confessed yet?
FAT MAN: Except his name, I could not get anything out of the runt.
THIN MAN: You have been here the whole bloody night, Srinivas. what have you been doing?
SRINIVAS: He's a tough guy.
THIN MAN: A little electricity will loosen him up.
SRINIVAS: Yes, sir.

SRINIVAS gets up to get a car battery from a corner. It has two cords, a red and a black one, with clips at the end. he puts the battery next to JAMAL. The two policemen look for a chip under JAMAL's shirt. There's nothing.

BOSS: It's hot, and my wife is giving me hell, and I've got a desk full of murderers, rapists, exhortionists, bum bandits and you. So why don't you save us both a lot of time and tell me how you cheated?

JAMAL says nothing. The BOSS nods to SRINIVAS. He puts the battery's clips on Jamal's toes. The BOSS keeps interrogating JAMAL in a quiet voice. SRINIVAS gives him an electric discharge. JAMAL moans.

SRINIVAS: I'm done, sir.
BOSS, to JAMAL: Now, listen. Hello!

He slaps JAMAL, not hard. JAMAL is unconscious.

BOSS: He's unconscious, Juti. What good is that? How many times have I told you, Srinivas?
SRINIVAS: I'm sorry, sir. Now next time we'll have Amnesty International here, peeing in their pants about human rights.
SRINIVAS: Sir, I was thinking....
BOSS: Get him down, tidy him up, for God's sake!!!!
SRINIVAS: What if he did know the answers?

The men make the anesthesised boy lie down on a table and blind him by pouring acid into his eyes.

Film commentary guide for Term 3: Cinema and Social Issues

OK, these are your instructions.

1. Watch each film and try to answer all the questions in this list, separately. You can do this while you watch, or immediately afterwards. You don't need to answer the question in exactly the order I give you.
2. Compare the answers you have given in one film and in the other. Work section by section.
3. Try to make conclusions in your comparison. Don't be afraid to give personal opinions.
4. Work in pairs, and edit each other's work.

1 The characters.
The heroes are Oliver Twist and Jamal.
What are their personal circumstances, their position in life?
What are their objectives? Do they work actively to obtain those objectives? Why or why not?
Are any physical characteristics very important for the story?
Personality traits, positive and negative. (see note)
Which of their characteristics help them survive and obtain their objectives? Which don't?
Do they evolve?

The heroine in “Oliver!” is Nancy. In Slumdog Millionaire, it's Latika.
Describe some differences between Nancy and all the other heroines we have studied this year.

Which of their characteristics help them survive and obtain their objectives? Which don't?

The Artful Dodger and Salim.
Determine their narrative role (antiheroes? Villains? Antagonists?). They do not necessarily coincide.
What are their circumstances and objectives?
Which of their characteristics help them survive and obtain their objectives? Which don't?
Do they evolve?

Other characters:
Comment on any other character in the story as you wish.

NOTE: Some characteristics that you need to consider in your analysis of most characters, except maybe the villains, are: responsibility, violence, maturity, decisiveness, love and affection, generosity or selfishness, kindness, sincerity, shyness vs. sociability, perseverance (stubborness), ambition, naïveté, resourcefulness.

2 Time.
How fast does time pass? How long does the story take? Are the films full of many quick events, or not?
What happens in the musical scenes in Oliver!? Does the action stop, or goes on? What about Slumdog Millionaire?
Comment on the time structure in Slumdog Millionaire. Have you ever seen similar films?
Determine the act division in both films, and at least one climactic event in each act.

3 Space.
Make a list of all the different spaces that appear in the films. Determine which ones are “positive” (clean, pretty, peaceful), which ones are “negative” (dirty, ugly, dangerous), which ones are ambiguous (for example: pretty but dangerous? ugly but full of love?). Consider the purpose of different spaces (they can be workplaces, homes, nature, transport....) Compare the locations in both films.

Consider the way in which changes in location affects the characters. Maybe they like some places more than others. Maybe they are in places that they hate. Maybe they are locked in claustrophobic places and they cannot get out.

4 Social issues.
What is the genre of each film? Do you think that it is the right genre to tell a story of social injustice?
Some of the issues that are part of both films are: poverty; education; pollution; gender inequality; violence; work exploitation (of children and adults); corrupt or inept justice systems.
Describe and compare the situations presented in each film, regarding each of those seven issues.
Do you think the films offer any solutions about any of these injustices?
Are the endings happy, sad, or bittersweet? Are they believable?
What do you think about Salim's behaviour at the end of the film? Why does he act in that way at the end?

5 Language and music.
How do the characters speak? (formally, informally, a lot, too little.....)
Mention at least ten specific examples of language in each film that you find interesting and expressive (words or complete lines of dialogue). Justify your answer. The examples from Oliver! can be from the songs, and be included in this question:
In Oliver!, make a one- or two-line summary of every song and describe it with AT LEAST two adjectives or expressions. (For example: funny, boring, it stops the action, it advances the plot, strange, pretty, sad, etc.)

Artículo sobre Kiva y los grupos de 4º 2009-2010

Éste es, ligeramente resumido, un artículo publicado en la revista "Mediodía" del CEP de Osuna-Écija.

Educación para el desarrollo y uso de TICs.

Este trabajo muestra un ejemplo de integración de educación en valores (o más concretamente educación para el desarrollo), uso de las TIC, coeducación, fomento de la cultura emprendedora, y adquisición de competencia comunicativa en la clase de Lengua Extranjera: Inglés.

Se practicó en cuarto de la E.S.O., en el I.E.S. Aguilar y Cano, la siguiente actividad hacia finales del curso 2009-2010: realizar un trabajo escrito, en inglés, individualmente, explicando a cuál de unos potenciales beneficiarios de microcréditos concedería el alumno/a una pequeña cantidad de euros.

CONTEXTO: MICROCRÉDITOS Y KIVA.ORG.

Los microcréditos, como su nombre indica, son créditos por cantidades pequeñas de dinero. Suelen concederse a emprendedores de países en desarrollo, casi siempre mujeres, y fueron concebidos en su forma actual y popularizados por el Nobel del la Paz bangladeshí Muhammad Yunnus, fundador del Banco Grameen. El 96% de los préstamos de este banco se conceden a mujeres.

Los organismos que conceden microcréditos no son ONG, sino bancos. En el Primer Mundo, podemos convertirnos en inversores a través de la página web de Kiva , surgida en 2005. Kiva actúa como intermediaria entre particulares, organismos que prestan ayuda al desarrollo, y emprendedores de todo el mundo, no necesariamente en países en desarrollo. En la actualidad, el volumen de dinero invertido es cercano a los 177 millones de dólares, prestado por participantes de más de 200 naciones que han financiado casi medio millón de proyectos. El 81.69% de los proyectos Kiva son llevados a cabo por mujeres.

Para ser un inversor en Kiva, es necesario tener una cuenta en Paypal, y tras localizar un proyecto que nos interese, basta con un par de “clics”. El dinero prestado llega a un banco u ONG local que se lo presta al proyecto que hemos elegido. Además, el dinero se recupera y puede ser reinvertido, aunque no recuperado.

EL ALUMNADO PARTICIPANTE.

Se trataba de una promoción completa de 4º de la E.S.O., con un alumnado con una motivación muy alta y una competencia comunicativa en general óptima para el nivel en el que nos hallábamos. Los tres grupos de alumnos realizaron la misma actividad, con esta secuenciación.

1. Trabajo más guiado y sistemático de comparación del “first conditional” y “second conditional”.
El first conditional es la oración condicional que en lengua española y en inglés se construye con futuro simple + presente de indicativo, aunque en español admite dos presentes: “Me iré/me voy a la playa si no llueve”; “I’ll go to the beach if it doesn’t rain”. El Second conditional es el condicional hipotético que se construye en inglés con would + pasado y en español con condicional y presente de subjuntivo: “si ganara la lotería, me iría de vacaciones”: “I’d go on holidays if I won the lottery”. Estas estructuras son relativamente complejas, no muy fáciles de adquirir, y se suelen introducir por primera vez hacia el final de la educación obligatoria.

2. Introducción de la idea de los microcréditos y su uso.

3. Familiarizarnos en clase con la web de Kiva.

4. Creación individual de una redacción defendiendo un proyecto concreto, utilizando el segundo condicional para decir “si tuviera dinero se lo prestaría a....” y para decir qué ocurriría en las vidas de los implicados si el proyecto se realizara.

5. Finalmente, si los alumnos lo deseaban, se escogería un proyecto entre todos, y cada alumno aportaría un euro. La profesora doblaría la aportación de los alumnos, con lo que se podrían aportar aproximadamente 50 euros a tres proyectos.

En las fases 2 y 3 fue necesario señalar algunas de las causas por las cuales la mayor parte de los créditos se conceden a mujeres, ya que eso causó algún grado de sorpresa. Las razones son fundamentalmente dos:

La primera, que las mujeres de los países en desarrollo no son mayoritariamente amas de casa, al contrario de lo que el alumnado imagina. Los hombres encuentran trabajo asalariado con más facilidad que las mujeres, y si ellas montan negocios necesitan una inversión económica; y en segundo lugar, las microfinancieras las prefieren porque tienen menos nivel de morosidad y reinvierten en la comunidad.

EL PROCESO DE SELECCIÓN.

Se procedió a un análisis de las preferencias de chicos y chicas, con este resultado: entre 28 chicos, 18 (62.3%) redacciones preferían un proyecto realizado por hombres, y 10 (35,7%) uno realizado por mujeres. Las 40 chicas, en cambio, tenían unas preferencias casi acordes con la representación en Kiva de hombres y mujeres: prefirieron 5 (12,5%) proyectos de hombres y 35 (87,5%) proyectos de mujeres. Para que la proporción hubiese sido lo más representativa posible de lo que podemos ver en la web, los varones habrían tenido que escoger una proporción de 5/23 y las chicas de 7/33 aproximadamente. Es decir: los chicos aplican un sesgo claramente sexista, y las chicas uno que sólo lo es ligeramente, ambos beneficiando a su propio género.

Algunas de las razones que ellos y ellas señalan para preferir distintos proyectos son reveladoras de sus principios. Les atraen proyectos llevados a cabo por padres o madres de familia y creen que el dinero beneficiará a esos hijos directamente:

El segundo interés después de las familias de los emprendedores es la comunidad. Algunos alumnos nombran a la comunidad en su conjunto como beneficiarios de los proyectos:

She runs a nursery school (...) my money could help Pamela Adhiambo in her project because a good education is basic for everyone. (Tiene una guardería (...) mi dinero podría ayudar a Pamela Adhiambo porque una buena educación es básica para todo el mundo) (Gabriela Q.)

Conceden una gran importancia a la valentía y el trabajo duro:

Ana is a women very fighter (Ana es una mujer muy luchadora) (María M.)

She is a very hard-working woman and fights for what wants (es una mujer muy trabajadora y lucha por lo que quiere) (Lucía G).

Secundina is a hardworking woman (Secundina es una mujer trabajadora) (Alejandro R)

Algunos chicos escogen proyectos relacionados con las profesiones que ellos quieren tener. Este motivo tiene menor importancia en las chicas porque en esta promoción, todas las chicas están muy motivadas para el Bachillerato y la Universidad mientras que parte de los chicos estaban más orientados al mundo laboral y a la formación profesional. En Kiva, muy pocos proyectos están relacionados con carreras profesionales cualificadas; una alumna interesada en la rama sanitaria, Ángela A, defiende el proyecto de una clínica pediátrica administrada por la mujer de un médico.

Ésta es la profesión que quiero tener cuando sea mayor) (Miguel Ángel Q., además escoge a un tocayo suyo).

Algunos señalaron el interés y la necesidad de este tipo de iniciativas:

Tiburcio lives in Paraguay, a developing country, for that reason is necessary that we who we lived in a developed country help him so that these countries progress (Tiburcio vive en Paraguay, un país en desarrollo, por este motivo es necesario que quienes vivimos en países desarrollados le ayudemos para que sus países progresen) (Carmen Q.)

In conclusion, if we help their future will be better! (En conclusión, ¡si les ayudamos tendrán un futuro mejor!) (Esperanza G.)

EL DESENLACE:

En los tres grupos, se utilizaron las redacciones como si fueran votos para escoger el continente y el sexo de la persona que presentase un proyecto para financiarlo cada una de las clases. En todos los grupos resultó elegida una mujer, madre de familia, dedicada al comercio, sudamericana. Sin embargo, solamente una de las tres clases recordó traer un euro a clase, que la profesora completó hasta llegar a los 50. Ese dinero se ha utilizado para financiar una tienda de comestibles en Ayacucho (Perú), propiedad de Piedad Justa, madre de cuatro hijos. Piedad Justa está devolviendo sus cuotas con regularidad por lo que hacia finales del presente curso se podrá reinvertir el dinero en otro proyecto.

CONCLUSIONES

Algunas conclusiones que pueden deducirse de este trabajo es que aunque los estudiantes estén informados acerca de medios sencillos de contribuir a la ayuda al desarrollo, no se sienten directamente responsables, como se deduce que que sólo la tercera parte de los alumnos participara finalmente en la financiación de un proyecto.

Resulta llamativo lo desequilibrado de las preferencias por género de los alumnos varones. Estudios anteriores, como Violencia de Género y Cotidianeidad Escolar, de Carmen Gregorio Gil, han puesto de manifiesto que los alumnos muestran aún una serie de prejuicios sexistas y discriminatorios. Este trabajo contribuye en la misma línea porque aunque los alumnos no dicen nada malo ni estereotipado de las mujeres, sencillamente las vuelven invisibles. Es también interesante notar que dan mucho más valor a la ayuda a la familia que al individualismo; para ellos, ser emprendedor tiene valor en cuando que revela valentía, esfuerzo y sentido de la responsibilidad social y familiar.

Respecto a la parte más lingüística del proyecto, los ejemplos señalados son una muestra de que en general, la teoría fue bien aplicada, con algunos errores que no impedían la comprensión. Todas las redacciones tenían una expresión correcta, con presentación, justificación y conclusión, y en la mayoría se utilizaron bien los tiempos verbales y el vocabulario necesario, si bien se daban numerosos errores menores.

La experiencia ha resultado casi enteramente positiva, y merece ser repetida en el futuro, con otros grupos de 4º o 1º de Bachillerato.

El corto

Realizar un corto es la prueba final de Proyecto Integrado en 1º de Bachillerato.

El corto va a ser la adapatación de un libro o película original en lengua inglesa.

De momento ya tenemos los grupos formados. La próxima tarea es escoger qué obra adaptar. Tres grupos ya han escogido.

El primero que lo pensó, de alumnos del grupo bilingüe, adaptará Gol!.

El segundo, con chicas de 1ºC y chicos de 1ºF, ha escogido El Mago de Oz, un precioso clásico americano.

El tercero se queda con lo que ya hemos estudiado en clase y se atreve con una adaptación de El Diario de Bridget Jones.

Estarán listos a finales de Mayo y en alguna mañana del mes de Junio, haremos una proyección de todos los cortos.

These are some very popular passages:

1º de Bachillerato: Traed los cuadernillos de fotocopias todos los días hasta que vuelva, porque lo primero que haré será corregirlo todo. Es decir: doy por hecho que cuando vuelva (martes, miércoles, espero que no más tarde), vais a tener los cuadernillos hechos completos, menos el tema del futuro.

2º Bachillerato: digo lo mismo del tema de la pasiva: traed el cuadernillo a clase, espero venir el jueves, corregiremos primero el diálogo de Rosencrantz & Guildernstern y luego la pasiva.

3 B y 1 F: no voy a corregir los crucigramas, pero comprobaré que lo tenéis hecho y pondré ceros a quien no lo tenga.

Commentary guide for films - part 2

This is the same guide, adapted for films with a supernatural element.

Film 1 is Bram Stoker's Dracula. Film 2 can be Twilight or a film of your choice. This film MUST include a supernatural villain. The element of horror MUST be supernatural. So, no serial killers.

Watch each film and try to answer all the questions in this list, separately. You can do this while you watch, or immediately afterwards.

Compare the answers you have given in one film and in the other.

Try to make conclusions in your comparison. Don't be afraid to give personal opinions.

Your essay should answer most questions in this outline.

1 Genre.
What are the genres of the two films? (comedy, horror, drama, etc).

2 The Plot.
Make a brief plot summary of both films. It must be personal and very short.

3 The characters.
The hero (Male or female). This is an ACTIVE character: the person that fights against evil.
What are the hero's objectives?
What physical characteristics are very important for the story?
Personality traits, positive and negative. What makes him/her strong. What makes him/her weak.
Does the character “feel real”? Why or why not?

The heroine(s). This is a PASSIVE character: she (very rarely a man) needs to be rescued from evil.
Personality traits, positive and negative.
Have the heroines got any characteristics that make them interesting, apart from “needing to be rescued”?

Only if you are considering Twilight, you can go back to the information from the 1st term:
How is the relationship between hero and heroine? Can you imagine them together?
Are the couple more interesting when they are apart, or when they are together?

The villain. In the films we are analising, the villain is supernatural.
Who is the villain? Why?
What are the villain's objectives?
Personality traits, positive and negative.
What are the villains superpowers and strenghts?
What are the villain's weak points?

Only if you are commenting Twilight:
Why haven't vampires conquered all the world? After all, they are invincible, aren't they?

Hero's allies vs. villain allies.
How many are there?
How much power do they have?
How do they help the hero and the villain?

Is the fight between good and evil a metaphor of something that happens in the real world?

3 Time.
How fast does time pass?
How long does the events in the film take?
Is the film's rhythm “fast” or “slow”? Does it affect our enjoyment?
Does the film have a constant “pace”? Are some sections faster or slower than others? Which ones?
If a section is much slower than the rest of the film, that scene is probably very important.
Comment on the structure:

Are there three acts? What happens at the divisions?
Main event of each act.

4 Space.
Where does the action take place?
How does the location affect the events or the characters?
Consider: city vs. country, houses vs. the open air. Big cities, small towns. Places that make the villain comfortable vs. places that don't.
Consider symbolism: places where “good” things happen. Places where “bad” things happen.

5 The visual aspect.
Describe the use of the light and the décor in the film.
How does it affect the way we see the film?

6 Language.
How do the characters speak? (formally, informally, a lot, too little.....)

Sorry it took me so long!

The students in 4º A gave me a total of 27 euros (I think). That's 33 $ USA. I couldn't just double it as I wanted because the website only admitted round numbers. So, I lent $50 and $7 for the website. That was 46 euros, 27 from you and 19 from me.

The money went to a project in Peru. As you wanted, it's a woman's project in South America. I also looked for a mother who is similar to other women in the projects you chose.

This is my page as a Kiva lender.

Para entender esta pequeña anécdota, hay que entender cómo son las aulas de los centros TIC andaluces. Cada aula tiene un ordenador de sobremesa para cada dos alumnos, y al fondo de la clase hay algunos controles para la corriente eléctrica, porque es muy fácil para los críos encender los ordenadores y estar leyendo el MARCA o su email mientras se da clase. Por ese motivo, los profesores controlamos si los ordenadores tienen luz eléctrica o no. Hay más enchufes, que no se controlan desde la pared, por si nos llevamos a las clases un DVD, un cañón proyector, un CD portátil, etc. El control de la pared es como el diferencial que hay en tu casa: un panel con una docena de palanquitas. Ah, los ordenadores usan Guadalinex, Firefox y Open Office. A mí nunca se me ha bloqueado uno, aunque Firefox sí se puede bloquear.

El otro día, una clase de 4º de la ESO (15-16 años: nacieron en 1994 aproximadamente) iba a trabajar con internet bajo mi supervisión. Dos alumnos compartían un ordenador del que habíamos comprobado anteriormente que no le funcionaba la toma de electricidad, el enchufe que hay en el suelo. Varias parejas ya habían encendido sus ordenadores y estaban empezando a trabajar. Y uno de los dos chicos con el ordenador que no tenía acceso a un enchufe que funcione se fue al diferencial y bajó todas las palancas. Todas. Así se apagaron todos los ordenadores. Le llamé la atención mientras él volvía a subirlas todas.

- ¿Qué estás haciendo?
- Estamos mirando a ver si así funciona.
- Anda, cámbiate de ordenador.

Es decir: esta pareja pensaba que si un enchufe de la pared no funciona, a lo mejor si lo cierras y lo vuelves a abrir entonces sí va. La corriente eléctrica funciona, en su concepción, igual que Windows. . Tres años de clase de Tecnología, un año de clase de Informática, y cuatro años trabajando con Guadalinex no han borrado la concepción básica de los "nativos digitales" con los que trabajo a diario, que es la siguiente:

Short and easy reading material

Reading in a foreign language is difficult. One of the problems is finding texts that are short, easy, and interesting. This is a collection of texts written in English in the original. All the links take you to archives of stories or comics. You need to find the "<<" "previous" or "back" button to read the archives.

Don't try to understand all the words. If the text is a webcomic, find the joke. If you find the joke, good job!

Webcomics:

* Calvin and Hobbes is a classic. The protagonists are a little boy, his pet tiger, and his parents.

* "Peanuts" is another classic. I hate it, but it has lots of fans...

* xkcd is "A webcomic of romance, sarcasm, math and language". The protagonists are a couple of scientists, boyfriend and girlfriend. I recommend it if your English is good, and you like maths, science or computers.

* Count your sheep looks like a children's story, but it's not. The protagonist are a girl, her imaginary friend and her mom. The girl's dad died when her mother was pregnant. I recommend you click "First" and read in chronological order.

* Indexed, like xkcd, is also about maths. Absolutely recommended if you like maths; impossible to understand if you don't like diagrams.

Gossip:
* Postsecret is a very famous American website. People write their secrets in cards and send them to a man in the United States. Then, he puts the secrets on the website. He changes them every week: there is no archive.

Poetry:
* Haiku is a Japanese poetic form. Haikus are very short and descriptive. They show an image of nature, and it expresses a feeling.

Estas son algunas de las recetas que podéis usar para el concurso de galletas y pasteles. Por supuesto, son sólo una guía, ya que la única condición es que lo que presentéis sea individual para que sea fácil de comer, y distinto del concurso de tartas del departamento de Francés.

Aquí tenéis recetas escocesas.

El dulce más típico para los americanos en Navidad son las galletas caseras. Las cookies americanas suelen ser muy dulces, muy fáciles de hacer, y un término medio entre galleta y bizcocho pues son un poco blandas. En esta web hay muchísimas recetas de cookies. Los brownies son también muy americanos. Los "cupcakes" son magdalenas decoradas como si fueran pequeñas tartitas. En la wikipedia hay muchas fotos.

Los "muffins" son las magdalenas, aunque a los ingleses y americanos les gusta hacerlas con mucha mantequilla y no aceite, y les ponen pedacitos, como fruta, nueces o chocolate. Aquí una receta de muffins de chocolate.

Celebrating St Andrew's Day

El 30 de Noviembre es San Andrés, patrón de Escocia. En los días cercanos a esa fecha, algunos alumnos de 4º de la E.S.O. venderán dulces a beneficio de la excursión de fin de curso. Estas son las recetas que usarán:

Pasteles de galletas: a base de galleta y chocolate. No se parece en nada a la tarta de galletas suave y blanda, a la española.

"Fudge" de chocolate. El "fudge" se parece al toffee pero el modo de preparación es diferente. Esta es una receta que no necesita horno.

Shortbread. Galletas de mantequilla. Recomiendo añadir una pizca de sal a la masa.

Tablet. Es una especie de toffee casero.

Sticky toffee pudding. Este postre no es nada práctico para venderlo porque es como una tarta muy blanda, pero lo incluyo porque es muuuy rico, muuuuy dulce, y muuuuuy típico.

En Tercero:
Los temas 2 y 3. El 3 va a quedar un poco resumido, así que ¡que nadie se asuste por ver tantas páginas de libro!

En Cuarto:
El tema 3. Lo vamos a expandir bastante.

Los días después del último examen, en todos los grupos trabajaremos en clase con la Wiki, el delicious, y con encuestas que también van a estar online. Y haremos actividades con villancicos en inglés.

El delicious tiene ya más de treinta entradas, csi todas son de ejercicios de gramática. Quienes tengan problemas con los verbos deben echarles un vistazo e ir haciéndolas a su ritmo.

Días especiales, buenos y malos:
Noviembre:
Martes 24. Entrega de la segunda redacción en 3º.
Viernes 27. Entrega de la segunda redacción en 4º.
Lunes 30: Día de Escocia. Película Braveheart por la tarde, y los de la excursión de fin de curso venderán galletas (mmmmmm.........)
Martes 1: los de 3º tienen su examen. Les recomiendo que vengan a ver la película el día antes para distraerse y hacer oído para el listening.
Viernes 4: examen de 4º.
Martes 15: Class Awards en 3º Bilingüe.
Viernes 18: Christmas Tea Party. Todos los grupos del centro visitarán el Salón de Actos, preferentemente durante su clase de Inglés o Francés, de 9:30 a 2. Otros departamentos harán concursos de platos dulces y salados y el Departamento de Inglés pondrá las bebidas.

Todos los lunes por la tarde: tutoría de padres.
Todos los martes en el recreo: biblioteca del departamento.

Os explico por si no os lo han contado o no lo habéis visto en las noticias. Los Presupuestos Generales del Estado son una ley de la que se hace un borrador, igual que hacéis vosotros el borrador de las redacciones, y entonces se debate en el Parlamento, y se le meten cambios, o no. Y entonces se aprueba y eso decide en qué se va a gastar el Gobierno el dinero en el 2010.

Este año, recortan el dinero para investigación y ciencia.

La investigación ha hecho vuestro pasado y vuestro presente. Investigación no son sólo los ordenadores, y la Física y la Medicina. La investigación es lo que hace que cambien desde los métodos con los que os damos clase, hasta los sabores de los dulces que se hacen en las fábricas del pueblo. Hicieron el tuenti y las azadas, los libros y Fama ¡a bailar!.

Y la investigación es vuestro futuro. Cada redacción que hacéis y cada ecuación es un ladrillo de las maravillas que podréis hacer si os dejan.

No quiero que ningún político os quite lo que es vuestro.

¡Nada de tijeras a la investigación!

Fomento de la lectura

Este curso, dentro del Plan de Lectura y Bibliotecas, vamos a probar a dedicar un ratito a la lectura voluntaria con unas normas sencillas:

* 15-20 minutos a la semana con un libro en inglés adecuado al nivel. Un libro distinto para cada alumno.

* Es totalmente obligatorio dedicarle ese tiempo seguido al libro que te toque, en silencio.

* Si el libro no te engancha, la semana que viene puedes coger otro diferente.

* No hay ninguna obligación de hacer un resumen después, aunque si quieres hacer un resumen o una presentación en clase contará como una nota positiva más.

Esto es válido para todos los grupos excepto 3º bilingüe, porque tenemos muy poco tiempo de clase. Allí probaremos algún otro método alternativo.

Hoy en 4 C hemos hablado un poco sobre el origen de los insultos porque estábamos repasando los rasgos de la personalidad. Y hablamos de la palabra "gil", así cortita, que hace muchos años significaba "tonto". Aparece en esta canción, un tango muy famoso que a mí me gusta en la versión de Joan Manuel Serrat.

Es una visión muy pesimista de la vida, compuesta en 1934, un año en el que el mundo no estaba para muchas alegrías.

Hoy ha empezado el curso verdaderamente después de haber tenido ayer las presentaciones. He conocido a cuatro de mis cinco grupos:

En 3º ESO B los alumnos son nuevos para mí. Son un grupo pequeño porque cerca de la mitad están en el grupo de francés.

En 4º ESO A + B unimos por razones organizativas a la parte de esos dos grupos que tiene Inglés como primera lengua extranjera (es decir, los "no bilingües"). Este grupo tiene unos 2/3 de alumnos de ciencias y 1/3 de letras. Muchos saben que quieren estudiar Bachillerato el año que viene, pero no han decidido aún lo que harán después. Tienen mucho tiempo todavía para decidirse. Más de la mitad de la clase fueron alumnos míos el año pasado.

En 4º ESO "Segunda Lengua" están los alumnos bilingües. También son caras conocidas del año pasado.

En 4º C casi todos los alumnos tienen pensado estudiar un ciclo de grado medio, aunque algunos piensan en un grado superior o en la Universidad. Muchos chicos quieren ser mecánicos, electricistas y ocupaciones parecidas. Algún día seguro que tienen que entender un libro de instrucciones en inglés y ahí espero que lo que aprendan este año sea útil.

Varios alumnos de "segunda lengua" y casi todas las chicas de 4º C van a trabajar en un proyecto muy divertido... ya daremos detalles en otra ocasión.

Mañana me toca conocer a mi último grupo: 3º ESO "segunda lengua".
